Why do people automatically assume that victims of rape who become pregnant would want an abortion?

I’ve read a few posts today that indicate the attitude that women who are raped absolutely should get abortions or that they all want to get abortions.

Here is an article that has some opinions from rape victims as well as studies. It is from a pro-life site, but I think the testimony in it is valid seeing as the info comes from people who have been there. I am pro-life but I try to find articles that aren’t bias…. not very successful on this subject. There is always a spin.

I love it when people tell me that I’m not open minded because of the stances I take on certain issues. What they fail to realize is that I have the views I have because I am open minded. My views are always open to evaluation and reevaluation. I was raped once, and at that time in my life I would have considered having an abortion if I had become pregnant. My life experiences have changed my mind about many things.

I was raped. I did not get pregnant( many don’t get pregant), and many women who do miscarry due to the stress. I would’ve put the child up for adoption. Not everyone wants to kill their baby even if the ‘father’ is a scumbag rapist. One of my friends is the result of a rape. Life is life.

Amazingly, my friend didn’t grow up to be screwed up in the head. b/c ‘dad’ was a rapist. <sarcasm>

wow people just make up too many assumptions.
Considering all the things that can go wrong w/a child and life i ngeneral…everyone should be aborted. <massive sarcasm>1 out of 70 has an ocd, autism is on the rise, the baby could be born blind, deaf, dumb, mute, Democrat, Republican, lesbian, homosexual, hiv/aids, crack baby, a Leafs fan and might potentially suffer a hang-nail … and just have all kinds of horrid risky stuff go wrong!

  2. la la la says:

People say that because either they are speaking for themselves if they were raped….. or because it’s worse to make a rape victim who doesn’t want to have the rapists baby have it, then to give someone who would want to have it the choice not to.

  3. Ana says:

it is probably because all of the ones who want abortions are the stories that get publicized. (sarcastically) after all, how interesting is a story without a woman wanting an abortion?(end sarcasm)

  4. **sarz** says:

I think its up the individual to make the decision. Maybe that’s what most people assume that’s what they’d do in the situation! Maybe your finding it hard is because people are more open minded than you and don’t push the pro life issue as it isn’t your decision what another female decides to do in an unfortunate and sometimes tragic situation!

  5. ♥ mademoiselle says:

It’s just that fact that they should have a CHOICE whether they should have an abortion.

  6. Beep, the Rested says:

I guess that they just like to assume things that match up with their preconceived ideas.

  7. wendy g says:

No one thinks that. They just think that rape victims, and everyone else, should have the choice.

  8. giggles says:

Because they can not get past the raped part and see what is there that is really important. It is just like a sterotype. They do not see the human life or the possibilities and contributions that this child could possess.

  9. Lyanthya says:

It isn’t the assumption that she would necessarily want one, but that it would be perfectly understandable if she DID want one, and if she did, she should have the right to one.

  10. Melody Lee says:

because if someone got raped and they had that child, obviously the child would have not only similar physical features, but they could potentially have mental issues as well and grow to be like their same disturbed father who raped their mother in the first place. And if someone was raped by a family member (immediate) they could risk their child having birth defects. I, as well as many others, would not wish this upon anyone. And although you can be pro-life, it is important to trust others to make the correct decision for THEMSELVES

EDIT: Like I said "POTENTIALLY could have mental issues"
its called a risk, not an assumption. Sorry, not all rapists are right in the head (sarcasm). and mental illness can be genetic. obviously there is no way to tell, so yes. It is a RISK.

And there is no need to play extremes. It is hard enough for mothers who know of teir own hereditary illnesses (cancer..etc), so wouldn’t it then be even harder for mothers who know nothing of their child’s father’s background? Like I said, it is the mother’s choice to do what she feels is best for her situation (which is not necessarily abortion…)

  11. That girl, Jules says:

Not everyone does. And not everyone should. It’s up to the individual to make the decision. I don’t care what their decision is; I only care that they CAN make the decision and that it’s available if and when someone needs it.

    PRO CHOICE

  12. Harriet says:

I think any woman should have the right to an abortion when she chooses. I think it’s reasonable and quite likely a woman would choose it in the case of rape. I think that because that’s probably what I would do and what lots of women say they have done or would do too, though nobody can really say unless they’re in that situation.

I know all pregnant rape victims don’t want abortions though and that’s fine too. I don’t particularly like rapist genes getting around but I can absolutely understand why a woman might not want an abortion. Pro-choice here
